Tea Etiquettes

tea ettiquettes

Drinking tea is a ritual. For some its an art. If you love tea, especially freshly brewed tea - these rules will make the experience better. Enjoy the time you spend with tea.

Don't stir to vigorously

When stirring the sugar into the tea, ensure not to stir to vigorously (read loudly) to avoid making a noise. Hold the spoon away from the edge of the cup and stir softly.

Hold your 'pinkies up'

Though nowadays the cup handles are much larger this tradition still holds true among tea drinkers. In the olden days, the tea cup handles were much smaller, and you would end up holding the cup with 2 fingers and the thumb. The little finger was held pointed up to maintain stability.

The saucer stays on the table

When tea is served with you on a traditional teacup with saucer, remember to not lift the saucer when drinking the tea. The saucer is always left on the table, unless you are walking around. When walking around, the saucer is used to place back the tea cup between sips.

Place the teaspoon on the Saucer

After the sugar and milk has been stirred, the teaspoon is placed on the saucer. People who leave the spoon in the cup are often called lazy. Plus, it would hamper your tea experience if the teaspoon keeps poking your face.

Use lemon rings, not wedges

Like squeezing lime into your tea? If using lemon wedges, squeeze and discard. If using lemon rings - you can put that into the cup and let it float. Aesthetically, lemon rings look pretty in your cup of tea, but more importantly - a lemon ring will hold your seeds, a wedge would not.

What are you waiting for? Go brew yourself a cup of tea and remember to follow these rules.
